Beryl crystallizes from beryllium-enriched fluids late in the cooling of granitic pegmatites, and occasionally in metamorphic rocks such as mica schist, where chromium or vanadium impurities can produce emerald. Brazil, Madagascar, and Colombia are among the most productive sources, with Colombian emerald deposits forming in an unusual setting where beryllium-poor black shale was invaded by hydrothermal fluids carrying the necessary chromium and beryllium together. Pegmatites can yield exceptionally large beryl crystals, some of the largest single crystals of any mineral, occasionally weighing many tons.
For collectors, hardness near 7.5 to 8 and hexagonal prismatic habit make beryl a rewarding species to hunt in old pegmatite dumps, though gem-quality transparent material is far scarcer than the common cloudy, pale green industrial-grade beryl found in most localities.

Hardness of 7.5 to 8 helps separate it from softer look-alikes such as apatite or fluorite, and its lack of visible cleavage combined with a conchoidal fracture is another useful clue. Color alone is unreliable for identification since beryl spans colorless, green, blue, pink, and yellow varieties, so crystal form and hardness testing remain the most dependable field checks, especially where beryl might be mistaken for quartz or tourmaline.
