Chalk

Chalk is a soft, fine-grained sedimentary rock composed almost entirely of calcium carbonate, formed from the microscopic calcite plates of marine algae called coccolithophores that accumulated on ancient seafloors. Its extremely fine, porous texture gives it a distinctively soft, powdery feel unlike denser limestones built from shell fragments or crystalline calcite. Chalk deposits, such as the White Cliffs of Dover, record enormous spans of slow, quiet marine deposition during the Cretaceous period.

Chalk accumulates on the floor of calm, relatively deep continental shelf seas, where billions of coccolithophore skeletons, each too small to see without a microscope, settle out of the water column over millions of years to form thick, pure carbonate layers. Because the depositional environment was so stable, chalk beds often preserve fossils of ammonites, sea urchins, and belemnites in exceptional detail. The most famous chalk exposures include the White Cliffs of Dover in England, the Champagne region of France, and the Smoky Hill Chalk of Kansas, famous for its marine reptile fossils.

Rockhounds interested in chalk should focus on fossil content rather than the rock itself, since flint nodules, which commonly form within chalk beds through silica replacement, are often the more prized find. Because chalk is soft and absorbs water readily, specimens can crumble or develop mold in damp conditions, so dry storage matters for preserving fossils embedded within it. Industrially, chalk remains a key ingredient in cement and agricultural lime, though most modern classroom chalk is actually gypsum.

How to identify Chalk

Chalk is typically white to pale gray or buff, dull and earthy in luster, and so soft it can be scratched with a fingernail or even written with directly on rough surfaces. Its effective hardness sits around 1 to 2 for the bulk rock, even though the calcite it is built from rates 3 on the Mohs scale, because of its loose, porous packing. It fizzes vigorously in dilute hydrochloric acid, confirming its carbonate composition, and leaves a white, powdery mark when rubbed against a rough surface. It is easily distinguished from denser limestone by its softness and chalky texture.
