Copper

Native copper is elemental copper, Cu, found uncombined in nature rather than bound up in an ore mineral, making it one of the relatively few metals that occurs in a directly usable metallic form at Earth's surface. It typically forms through the reduction of copper-bearing solutions in basaltic lava flows or in the oxidized zones above sulfide ore deposits. Native copper holds particular historical importance because ancient peoples were able to cold-hammer and later smelt it directly, marking one of humanity's earliest uses of metal.

Geology & background

Native copper forms in two principal settings: within amygdaloidal basalts, where hydrothermal fluids reduced copper-bearing solutions as they percolated through vesicular lava flows, and in the oxidized supergene zones above copper sulfide deposits, where descending groundwater redeposits copper as pure metal. The single most famous locality is Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, where Precambrian lava flows host masses of native copper so large that some historic specimens weighed many tons, and Native American peoples worked this copper for tools and ornaments thousands of years before European contact. Other notable sources include Bisbee, Arizona; Chile's Atacama copper belt; and Cornwall, England.

Collectors especially prize crystallized native copper showing cubic, dodecahedral, or arborescent branching forms, which are far less common than the massive or nugget-like material typically recovered. Because copper tarnishes and develops a dull, sometimes greenish patina of copper oxides and carbonates over time, specimens are often lightly cleaned or lacquered to preserve their bright metallic color, and Michigan copper remains the benchmark material against which other native copper localities are compared.

How to identify Copper

Native copper has a distinctive reddish-orange to copper-red color when freshly broken, though most surface specimens are tarnished brown, black, or green from oxidation, and it leaves a shiny copper-red to copper-colored streak. It is soft, at a hardness of 2.5 to 3, highly malleable rather than brittle, and lacks cleavage, instead deforming or showing a hackly fracture when bent or cut. Its malleability, obvious metallic luster, and characteristic streak readily distinguish it from copper-bearing minerals like malachite or azurite, which are brittle, harder, and produce green or blue streaks instead.
