Cuprite is a copper oxide mineral, Cu2O, notable for its deep red color and status as an important secondary ore of copper. It forms in the oxidized upper zones of copper sulfide deposits, where weathering converts primary copper minerals into oxides and carbonates. Cuprite often occurs alongside native copper, malachite, and azurite, forming a colorful assemblage typical of copper deposit gossans.

Cuprite crystallizes in the cubic system, developing as octahedral or cubic crystals, though it is more commonly found as massive, granular, or earthy red material coating other copper minerals. It forms specifically within the oxidation zone of copper deposits, above the water table, where oxygen-rich groundwater alters primary sulfides like chalcopyrite and bornite into oxides. Notable crystal specimens have come from Tsumeb, Namibia; Chessy, France, which lent its name to the crystal variant chalcotrichite; and Bisbee, Arizona.

Rockhounds prize well-formed cuprite crystals for their brilliant red color and adamantine luster, qualities that make fine specimens quite valuable despite the mineral's abundance as an ore. A fibrous, hair-like variety called chalcotrichite forms delicate tufts of tangled red needles and is especially sought after. Because cuprite converts easily into malachite through continued weathering, many specimens show a green malachite coating developing over an underlying red cuprite core, a transformation worth noting when examining a piece.

How to identify Cuprite

Cuprite is identified by its characteristic deep red to reddish-brown color, adamantine to submetallic luster, and brownish-red streak, a combination not shared by many other minerals. It has a hardness of 3.5 to 4, is somewhat brittle, shows poor cleavage, and breaks with a conchoidal to uneven fracture. It occurs as cubic or octahedral crystals, in massive form, or as tufted, hair-like chalcotrichite. Cuprite is sometimes mistaken for hematite or cinnabar, but its distinct red streak and association with other copper minerals usually settle the question.
