Elbaite

Elbaite is the most common gem-quality species within the tourmaline mineral group, a complex borosilicate rich in sodium, lithium, and aluminum with the formula Na(Li,Al)3Al6(BO3)3Si6O18(OH)4. It produces one of the widest color ranges of any gem mineral, including pink, green, blue, and the bicolor watermelon tourmaline prized by collectors. Elbaite takes its name from the island of Elba, where fine crystals were first described.

Elbaite crystallizes in lithium-rich granite pegmatites, growing in cavities called pockets where residual mineral-rich fluid slowly cools and deposits large, well-formed prismatic crystals over long periods. Major producing localities include Brazil's Minas Gerais region, source of the famous neon-blue Paraiba tourmaline colored by trace copper, along with Afghanistan, Nigeria, Mozambique, and the historic Pala pegmatites of California, which have yielded prized pink and bicolor material for over a century.

Collectors and rockhounds value elbaite for its striking color zoning, which can produce distinct bands or a pink core surrounded by a green rind within one crystal, sliced crosswise to reveal a watermelon-like pattern. Because tourmaline's color depends on trace elements like manganese, iron, and copper incorporated during crystal growth, no two localities produce quite the same palette. Elbaite crystals also display strong pleochroism, appearing to shift in color or intensity depending on the viewing angle.

How to identify Elbaite

Elbaite forms elongated, striated prismatic crystals with a distinctive rounded triangular cross-section, terminating in complex pyramidal faces. It shows vitreous luster, a white streak, and a hardness of 7 to 7.5, harder than a steel file. Cleavage is essentially absent and fracture is conchoidal to uneven. Color zoning along or across the crystal's length is common and diagnostic. Elbaite is sometimes confused with other tourmaline species or with amethyst and topaz, but its crystal cross-section and color banding are usually distinctive enough to identify it.
