Muscovite crystallizes in granites and granitic pegmatites, where it grows alongside quartz, feldspar, and tourmaline, and it is equally common in metamorphic schists and gneisses formed from clay-rich sedimentary rocks. Some pegmatites, notably in New England, India, and Brazil, have produced muscovite sheets large enough to cut into electrical insulating plates, once an important industrial use before synthetic alternatives became widespread. Fine crystal specimens also come from Brazil's pegmatite districts and the mica schists of the Alps. How to identify Muscovite
Muscovite forms thin, flat, pseudo-hexagonal crystals or books that split easily into transparent to translucent sheets, colorless to pale tan, silver, or green. Luster is vitreous to pearly, streak is white, and hardness is low, around 2 to 2.5. Its perfect basal cleavage produces sheets that are both flexible and elastic, snapping back after bending, which is the key test separating it from chlorite, whose flakes bend but stay bent.
