Soapstone

Soapstone, also called steatite, is a soft metamorphic rock composed predominantly of talc along with varying amounts of chlorite, mica, amphiboles, and carbonate minerals. Its defining trait is an extremely low hardness, around 1 on the Mohs scale, giving it the greasy, soap-like feel that inspired its common name. It forms through the metamorphism of ultramafic and other magnesium-rich rocks, often near serpentinite bodies.

Hardness is extremely low, around 1, easily scratched with a fingernail, and the rock has a massive, non-crystalline appearance dominated by talc's characteristic softness. It lacks true cleavage as a rock, though the talc within it has perfect cleavage at the microscopic scale, and it breaks with an uneven fracture. It can be confused with pyrophyllite or serpentinite, both of which can feel similarly soft and greasy.
