Talc

Talc is a hydrous magnesium silicate, Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, and the softest mineral known, defining hardness 1 on the Mohs scale, easily scratched by a fingernail. It forms through the hydrothermal alteration of magnesium-rich rocks like dolomite, serpentine, or ultramafic igneous rock, and has a distinctively greasy, soapy feel. Massive, compact talc is known as soapstone and has been carved for cookware, sculpture, and ornamental objects for thousands of years.

Rockhounds and collectors typically encounter talc as soft, greasy, pale green to white foliated masses, or as the massive variety soapstone, long favored for carving because it can be shaped with simple hand tools before hardening slightly with age and exposure. Because talc is so soft, specimens scratch and mark easily during handling and should be stored separately from harder minerals. Talc is also economically important well beyond geology, used in cosmetics, ceramics, paper coating, and industrial lubricants.

How to identify Talc

Talc is identified almost entirely by feel and hardness, showing a distinctive greasy or soapy texture and a hardness of 1, scratched effortlessly by a fingernail, which places it at the very bottom of the Mohs scale. It has a pearly to greasy luster, a white streak, and perfect cleavage in one direction, producing thin flexible but inelastic sheets or flaky masses. Color ranges from white and pale green to gray. Talc is sometimes confused with pyrophyllite, a chemically distinct mineral of nearly identical appearance and feel, distinguishable mainly through laboratory testing.
